Yarborough v. Yarborough
United States Supreme Court
290 U.S. 202 (1933)
In a Georgia divorce, the father (defendant) was ordered to pay $1,750 to his daughter Sadie's (plaintiff) trustee as a final, unalterable settlement of his support obligations under Georgia law; Sadie was not herself a party to the divorce. She later moved to South Carolina, where, at 16, she sued her father — still domiciled in Georgia but owning property in South Carolina — for additional education and maintenance funds. The South Carolina court ordered him to pay $50 per month, and he sought Supreme Court review.
Whether the issuance of a permanent, unalterable decree of alimony to a child in one state precludes another state, in which the defendant does not reside, from issuing a subsequent decree of support.
