United States v. Abdulmutallab
United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan
2011 WL 4345243 (2011)
After attempting to detonate explosives concealed in his underwear aboard a flight to Detroit and being subdued and burned by passengers, Abdulmutallab was questioned for 50 minutes at the hospital by FBI agents without Miranda warnings, during which he admitted attempting to blow up the plane on al-Qaeda's behalf, with agents specifically withholding the warnings out of concern that time was limited to prevent additional imminent attacks.
Whether the public-safety exception to the Miranda warnings requirement permits law-enforcement officers to question a terrorism suspect regarding the possibility of an imminent attack on the United States or other threat to public safety without first advising the individual of his constitutional right against self-incrimination.
