Robertson v. People Magazine
United States District Court for the Southern District of New York
2015 WL 9077111 (2015)
Tatsha Robertson (plaintiff), the only Black senior editor at People Magazine (People) (defendant), was terminated as part of 'workforce restructuring' and sued for race discrimination. During discovery, Robertson served 135 document requests seeking essentially unrestricted access to People's editorial files, including all documents about People's regular meetings, all documents on how covers were chosen, and every cover going back to 2005, four years before she even became an editor. People objected, and Robertson moved to compel production of the requested documents.
Whether, under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 26, discovery requests must be proportional to the needs of the case.
