Chand v. International Association of Athletics Federations
Court of Arbitration for Sport
CAS 2014/A/3759 (2017)
Dutee Chand (plaintiff), a competitive runner with hyperandrogenism (naturally elevated testosterone), was suspended from competition under regulations adopted by the International Association of Athletics Federations (the association) (defendant) restricting eligibility for female athletes with high natural testosterone. Chand challenged the regulations as unlawfully discriminatory, based on flawed assumptions about testosterone's effect on performance, disproportionate to any legitimate goal, and an improper form of doping control.
Whether the evidence showing a relationship between enhanced testosterone levels and improved athletic performance is strong enough to justify excluding female athletes with naturally high testosterone from women's competition.
