Wright v. Newman
Georgia Supreme Court
467 S.E.2d 533 (1996)
Relevant factsFree
Wright (defendant) was not Newman's (plaintiff) son's biological father, but listed himself as the father on the birth certificate, gave the boy his last name, and acted as his father for ten years, despite always knowing he wasn't the biological parent. Newman never sought to identify or pursue support from the child's actual father because of Wright's ongoing role. After the relationship ended, Wright refused to continue support; Newman sued, and the trial court ordered him to pay child support for both her children (he admitted paternity of the other).
IssueFree
Whether an obligation to provide child support can be enforced through promissory estoppel.
