Wainwright v. Sykes

Sykes (defendant) failed to make a timely objection, as required by Florida's contemporaneous-objection rule, to testimony he later claimed violated his Miranda rights; he raised the issue only after his direct appeal, and his subsequent state habeas efforts failed. He then sought federal habeas review of the Miranda claim.

Whether a petition for habeas corpus may be granted where the defendant did not raise a federal claim in state court in compliance with state procedural rules and has not shown cause and prejudice for that noncompliance.
