U.S. Dept. of Agriculture v. Moreno

The Food Stamp Act excluded from eligibility any household containing a member unrelated to the rest of the household; Moreno (plaintiff), who lived with an unrelated woman and her three children, met every other income and eligibility requirement but was denied benefits under this provision, as was her housemate. Moreno sued the USDA (defendant) in federal court, and the district court held the provision violated the Fifth Amendment's Due Process Clause; the USDA appealed.
