In February 1947, the U.S. Military Government for Germany created Military Tribunal III to try sixteen German judges and legal officials, including Josef Altstoetter (defendant), many of whom worked in the Reich Ministry of Justice. All were charged with judicial murder and other atrocities committed by weaponizing the legal system to persecute, enslave, and exterminate people on a large scale, including conspiracy to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity against civilians and soldiers of countries at war with Germany. All defendants pleaded not guilty.
