Jack Ferranti (defendant) arranged for associates to burn down his store to collect insurance money; the resulting fire destroyed the store and two floors of apartments above it, left residents homeless, destroyed their belongings, injured several residents and firefighters, and killed one firefighter. Ferranti was convicted of arson resulting in death and other crimes, and also lied to investigators and tried to intimidate witnesses. At sentencing, after imposing a prison term, the judge turned to the question of monetary restitution to the victims.
