Tarasoff v. Regents of University of California

Poddar told university psychologist Dr. Moore he intended to kill fellow student Tatiana Tarasoff, and though Moore recommended involuntary commitment, Poddar was released after appearing rational and his supervisor discontinued further involvement; no one associated with the Regents (defendant) warned Tatiana or her parents (plaintiffs), and Poddar later killed her, prompting a negligence suit that the trial court dismissed.
