Stanley v. University of Southern California
United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
13 F.3d 1313 (1994)
USC (defendant) paid women's basketball coach Stanley (plaintiff) $60,000 plus housing allowance compared to $150,000 for men's coach Raveling, who had significantly more coaching experience, authored bestselling books, and undertook extensive public-relations duties including outside speaking engagements and fundraising activities that generated roughly 90 times more revenue than the women's program; after Stanley's contract expired and she rejected USC's offers (still below Raveling's salary), she was terminated and sued under Title IX and the Equal Pay Act, seeking a preliminary injunction for reinstatement, which the district court denied.
Whether universities are required, under Title IX and the Equal Pay Act, to pay equal salaries to their men's and women's basketball coaches.
