Safford Unified School District #1 v. Redding
Supreme Court
557 U.S. 364 (2009)
Vice Principal Kerry Wilson, investigating students passing out common over-the-counter pain relievers, had a female school official strip-search Savanna Redding (plaintiff) after another student implicated her, directing Redding to pull out her bra and underwear, exposing her breasts and pelvic area; no pills were found. Redding sued the school district and officials (defendants) for violating the Fourth Amendment; the district court granted summary judgment for the defendants, but the Ninth Circuit reversed, finding a Fourth Amendment violation, and the Supreme Court granted certiorari.
Whether, under the Fourth Amendment, a school official may strip search a student without a specific suspicion that the student is hiding evidence in intimate places.
