Jackie Rice (defendant) helped the couple's 34-year-old, independent son Darrin open credit-card accounts without his wife Carolyn's (plaintiff) knowledge, and the debt eventually grew to $65,000; Carolyn only learned of it from collection calls. After 42 years of marriage, Carolyn filed for divorce, and the trial court classified the debt as marital, splitting it evenly between the spouses; the court of appeals affirmed, and Carolyn appealed.
