Reading v. Regem
Court of King's Bench
2 KB 268 (1948)
Relevant factsFree
Reading (plaintiff), a British Army sergeant stationed in Cairo, used his military uniform and status to escort a third party's cargo trucks through Cairo police checkpoints in exchange for substantial personal payment, exploiting the fact that his uniform allowed the trucks to pass freely; when the army discovered the large sums in his accounts and traced their source, it impounded the money on the ground that Reading had violated his duty by monetizing his military status. Reading sued to recover the impounded funds, arguing the money belonged to him.
