Poole ex rel. Elliot v. Textron
United States District Court for the District of Maryland
192 F.R.D. 494 (2000)
In Ryan Poole's (plaintiff) suit against Textron (defendant) over a defective golf car, Textron repeatedly stonewalled discovery -- objecting to admission requests, failing to interview its own employees, and producing only a fraction of relevant documents and advertising materials -- until court orders eventually forced it to produce nearly 3,000 pages of documents and over 200 pages of advertising. Poole moved for sanctions seeking over $50,000 in attorneys' fees, while Textron argued the $23,260 in additional fees it incurred complying with the court's order was itself sufficient sanction.
Whether a federal court judge may sanction a party for abusing the discovery process.
