Without first demanding satisfaction, Germany retaliated by attacking the Portuguese post of Naulilaa and other Angolan posts, causing significant casualties and property damage. Portugal established a special arbitral tribunal under the Treaty of Versailles to hold Germany accountable for the attacks.
