Cook v. University Plaza

Northern Illinois University students (plaintiffs) signed residence-hall contracts with privately owned dormitory University Plaza (defendant) that let University Plaza reassign rooms and roommates and move residents between rooms at will; the contract itself stated it did not create a landlord-tenant relationship. When the students sued over their security deposits relying on a landlord-tenant statute, the trial court sided with University Plaza, finding no landlord-tenant relationship existed.
