tort

Body of law pertaining to wrongful acts or infringements of a right (not within a contract) leading to damages and civil legal liability.

An act or omission that gives rise to injury or harm to another and amounts to a civil wrong for which courts impose liability.

Torts fall into three general categories: (1) intentional torts (such as intentionally hitting a person); (2) negligent torts (such as causing an accident by failing to obey traffic rules); and (3) strict liability torts (liability for making and selling defective products).
