Several school districts in Washington, including Odessa School District (Odessa), required students and their parents or guardians to sign a form releasing the school district from liability for ordinary negligence in connection with interscholastic activities. Wagenblast and other students filed a lawsuit seeking a declaration that these releases were invalid. The trial court ruled in favor of Odessa, and Wagenblast appealed.
